William Fitzgerald is a Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Marine Sciences at the University of Connecticut, renowned as a pioneer in mercury cycle research. His work examines atmospheric and aquatic mercury dynamics, using peat bogs, lake sediments, and coastal systems as archives of historical deposition.
He earned a PhD from MIT-Woods Hole (1970) and established The Mercury Laboratory at UConn, developing ultra-trace analysis methods now used globally. Honors include the Geochemical Society’s Patterson Award (2003) and Mahaffey Lifetime Achievement Award (2011).
Research Focus: Global mercury cycling, methylmercury bioaccumulation, and anthropogenic impacts. Key projects study mercury in Arctic Alaskan lakes, Long Island Sound, and ombrotrophic bogs. Collaborations span France, New Zealand, and the Arctic.
Contributions: Demonstrated preindustrial mercury pollution from mining, quantified atmospheric deposition fluxes, and revealed iron-mediated methylmercury decomposition in Arctic lakes. Advocates for science-informed mercury policy.
