William Enck is the Goodnight Distinguished Professor in Security Sciences in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University, where he serves as co-director of the Secure Computing Institute and director of the Wolfpack Security and Privacy Research (WSPR) Laboratory. His research spans systems security with applications in software supply chains, 5G and cloud infrastructure, mobile platforms, Internet of Things, and networks.
Dr. Enck received his Ph.D. and M.S. in Computer Science and Engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 2011 and 2006, respectively, and his B.S. in Computer Engineering from Penn State in 2004. His doctoral thesis was titled "Analysis Techniques for Mobile Operating System Security" under advisor Dr. Patrick McDaniel.
His research focuses on practical security solutions for real-world systems. Dr. Enck's work in mobile application security has significantly influenced consumer awareness and platform design, earning recognition such as the SIGOPS Hall of Fame Award. He has pioneered research in software supply chain security, cellular infrastructure security, and mobile platform security. His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on analyzing vulnerabilities in open-source cellular cores, hardening serverless applications, and applying AI techniques to vulnerability detection and remediation across multiple domains including 5G networks, cloud infrastructure, and software supply chains.

As an educator and mentor, Dr. Enck has advised numerous PhD students who have gone on to successful careers in both industry (Google, Meta, TikTok, Chainguard) and academia. His current research is supported by multiple grants from the National Science Foundation, the US Navy, and other funding agencies, totaling over $7.8 million in active research funding. He serves as Vice President of the USENIX Board of Directors and has chaired major security conferences including USENIX Security 2018 and IEEE S&P 2024-2025.
Dr. Enck leads the Wolfpack Security and Privacy Research (WSPR) Laboratory and co-directs both the Secure Computing Institute and the Secure Software Supply Chain Center (S3C2) at NC State University, fostering collaboration between academia and industry to address critical security challenges.
