William D. Underwood is concluding his tenure as the 18th President of Mercer University (2006-2026) to return to his academic roots as a full-time professor at Mercer Law School, where he will hold the Tommy Malone Distinguished Chair in Trial Advocacy. His presidency has been transformational for Mercer University, significantly expanding its academic scope, research profile, and physical footprint while maintaining its commitment to student-centered education.
Underwood's leadership achievements include:
- Increasing enrollment by over 30% to more than 9,200 students across 12 schools and colleges
- Growing the endowment from $168 million to nearly $530 million
- Elevating Mercer to Doctoral Research University status (R2 classification)
- Establishing Mercer On Mission, with nearly 3,000 participants in over 200 global projects
- Expanding the Health Sciences Center across multiple Georgia campuses
- Overseeing more than $400 million in campus facility investments
Academically, Underwood has maintained a steadfast commitment to teaching excellence throughout his career. Previously named a Master Teacher at Baylor University (one of only 21 recipients in the institution's history at that time), he returns to the classroom after nearly two decades of university leadership, fulfilling a pledge he made when first elected president.
