Dr. William C. Beckerson is a Researcher in the Department of Biology at Utrecht University, Faculty of Science, specializing in Developmental Biology within the Biodynamics and Biocomplexity theme. His work bridges two major areas: neuroparasitology and discipline-based education research (DBER) in biology.
His educational background includes a BSc from Georgetown College, KY, and an MSc and PhD in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from the University of Louisville. He is an NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellow, having worked at the University of Central Florida and currently at Utrecht University.
Dr. Beckerson's research focuses on two primary domains: 1) the molecular mechanisms by which Ophiocordyceps fungi manipulate ant behavior, particularly through compounds like ergot alkaloids, and 2) the effectiveness of active learning and gamification (especially via virtual reality) in biology education. He is a strong advocate for inclusive teaching and has developed the educational VR game 'Zombie Ants VR' in collaboration with Dr. Charissa de Bekker and the Utrecht School of the Arts.
His recent publications span both biological research and pedagogical innovation, with work appearing in journals such as Animal Behaviour and Science Journal for Kids. He employs advanced techniques including RNA-seq, transcriptomics, and behavioral analysis tools like MARGO.
- NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Dr. Beckerson is actively involved in mentoring, public outreach, and collaborative research with international partners at Wageningen University, Middlebury College, and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He places high value on teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration to advance both scientific discovery and educational practice.
He leads the community science initiative 'Zombie Fungus Foray' and frequently engages with the public through classrooms, museums, and comic conventions, discussing topics ranging from GMOs and evolution to the science behind zombies. His teaching philosophy emphasizes experiential learning and accessibility, aiming to inspire the next generation of scientists through immersive and engaging methods.
