William Barnett is a Professor of History at North Central College, specializing in interdisciplinary approaches to American history with a focus on environmental and urban contexts. He co-founded the Environmental Studies program and actively integrates place-based analysis into his teaching and research.

His research spans American Environmental History, the History of the American West, Urban History, and Public History. Recent work examines Midwest prairie, dune, and lakeshore ecosystems. He has authored/co-edited books analyzing human-nature interactions in Chicagoland and the Twin Cities.
Barnett leads experiential learning trips, including Civil Rights movement tours across the South, and designed a Public History seminar involving Chicago-area cultural institutions. His courses cover topics like U.S. Social Movements, African American History, and American Environmental History.
