معرفی
William Austin is a Professor in the School of Geography & Sustainable Development at the University of St Andrews. He is affiliated with the Environmental Change Research Group and the Marine Alliance for Science & Technology Scotland. His research focuses on reconstructing past climate change through marine records, with specialties in palaeoceanography, marine geology, and foraminifera. He holds a B.Sc. in Geology from University College London, an M.Sc. in Micropalaeontology from the University of Wales, and a Ph.D. in Ocean Sciences from the University of Wales.

- Ph.D., Ocean Sciences, University of Wales
Research Interests
Dr. Austin’s work emphasizes the application of biogeochemical proxies and tephrochronology to study North Atlantic stratigraphy and climate change. His research spans organic carbon sequestration in salt marshes, fjords, and shelf seas, with a focus on blue carbon ecosystems and their role in global climate mitigation. He collaborates internationally on projects like the EURO-CARBON database and investigates carbon storage dynamics in coastal environments.
Recent Research Trends
His recent publications highlight advancements in quantifying marine and coastal carbon stocks, the development of standardized blue carbon accounting methodologies, and the vulnerability of sedimentary carbon to environmental disturbances. His work bridges fundamental geoscience with applied climate policy, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary approaches to address carbon sequestration challenges.
Awards
- 2005: Mary Sears Award (Visiting Scholar), Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
- 2003: Science Faculty Award (Visiting Scholar), Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research
Grants & Leadership
Austin leads major initiatives such as the Polar Ocean Mitigation Potential (POMP) project and Carbon sequestration in BLUe EcoSystems (C-BLUES), funded by Innovate UK. He also oversees NERC projects exploring shelf sea carbon dynamics and serves as PI for the Ocean Decade Blue Carbon Programme Secretariat.
Collaborations & Labs
He collaborates with global institutions and leads the Environmental Change Research Group, focusing on sedimentary organic carbon, tephrochronology, and climate change impacts on coastal ecosystems.
