Willem Bruin is a Post-Doc researcher affiliated with the Institute of Psychology at Leiden University, working within the Health, Medical and Neuropsychology unit. He collaborates with Dr. Moji Aghajani and global consortia to investigate anxiety disorders in adolescents using machine learning techniques and large-scale neuroimaging datasets.
His research focuses on individual-level neurobiological inferences through supervised machine learning models applied to neuroanatomical data (cortical thickness, surface area, subcortical volumes) in fronto-striato-limbic and temporoparietal regions. This work aims to improve mental healthcare decision-making by creating predictive models for anxiety disorders.
The 2024 publication in Nature Mental Health demonstrates modest yet robust brain-based classifications for panic disorder and transdiagnostic anxiety subgroups differentiated by sex, medication status, and symptom severity. This benchmark study utilized the ENIGMA-Anxiety Consortium dataset comprising 3,343 participants aged 10-25 across 32 global sites.
