Dr. William Odom is an Associate Professor at Simon Fraser University's School of Interactive Arts and Technology, where he founded and directs the Homeware Lab. His research focuses on designing technologies that foster longer-term human-technology relations, using interdisciplinary approaches spanning HCI, interaction design, and tangible computing. Affiliations include ongoing collaborations with Microsoft Research and recognition through multiple prestigious fellowships and awards.
His research explores how technology mediates everyday practices like reminiscence, self-exploration, and social connection. Key interests include slow interaction design, digital possessions, IoT, and domestic computing. Odom investigates how computational objects can sustain meaningful engagement over extended periods through creative design methods.
Publications demonstrate consistent focus on temporality and materiality in HCI, with recurring themes of memory, personal data interaction, and co-creative systems. Recent work explores AI introspection and multi-perspective experience capture.
Scientific Awards:
- 7 Best Paper Awards (CHI, Ubicomp, DIS)
- 9 Best Paper Honorable Mentions
- International Design Excellence Award (IDEA)
- Fulbright Scholar, Banting Fellow
- Emerging Researcher Award
Directs the Homeware Lab with funding from NSERC, SSHRC, CFI, and industrial partners. The lab specializes in digital fabrication and electronics prototyping to create research products studied in everyday contexts. Current projects examine generative AI interfaces and distributed co-listening systems.
