Wilfred Vermerris

Wilfred Vermerris is a Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Microbiology & Cell Science at the University of Florida. His research focuses on plant genetics, bioenergy crops, and lignin biosynthesis, with particular emphasis on improving sorghum for biomass and biofuel applications. He leads projects investigating plant-microbe interactions, cell wall composition, and metabolic pathways critical to stress tolerance and nutrient acquisition.

His work integrates molecular genetics, genomics, and biochemical approaches to understand and enhance traits such as disease resistance, nitrogen use efficiency, and carbohydrate accumulation in crops. Recent studies highlight discoveries in biological nitrogen fixation via sorghum aerial root mucilage, lignin modification for reduced biofuel processing costs, and dual-RNA sequencing of plant-pathogen interactions.
