Dr. Wiebke Drews is a Research Fellow at Bundeswehr University Munich, where she leads the 'Political Competition' use case for the SPARTA research project, focusing on monitoring and nowcasting electoral campaigns across Twitter/X, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. She is currently on maternity leave since June 2024.
She earned her PhD from the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, in November 2020. Her doctoral thesis, 'Digital Politics Across Contexts, Social Media, Parties and Citizens: Technological Opportunities and Challenges in Modern Democracies,' examined the interplay of technology and democracy.
Her research lies at the intersection of technology, democracy, and power, investigating how ICTs reshape electoral campaigns, political expression, and power structures. She specializes in social media analytics using:
- Natural Language Processing (NLP)
- Network analysis
- Survey research
Dr. Drews serves on the Steering Committee of the ECPR Standing Group on Internet & Politics and co-directed euandi2021, a Voting Advice Application for the 2021 German federal election. Her work has been published in Frontiers, Political Research Exchange, PLoS ONE, and German Politics.
