Dr. Wendy van de Sande is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases at Erasmus MC. Her research is centered on mycetoma, particularly eumycetoma caused by Madurella mycetomatis, using innovative models such as Galleria mellonella to study pathogenesis and treatment. She is actively involved in international collaborations and leads key initiatives in antifungal development and diagnostics.
Her research interests include medical mycology, host-pathogen interactions, antifungal drug discovery, and molecular diagnostics. She focuses on understanding the biology of mycetoma grains, developing rapid detection methods, and evaluating new therapeutics like ibrexafungerp and Cetyl-Maritima. Her work bridges laboratory research with clinical applications, contributing to global efforts in tropical disease control.
The recent articles highlight a strong trend in combining basic microbiological research with translational medicine. Studies utilize Galleria mellonella as a model organism to assess drug efficacy, investigate iron regulation during fungal development, and develop point-of-care molecular diagnostics. There is a clear emphasis on combating neglected tropical diseases through innovative science and international collaboration.
Scientific Awards:
- VICI grant for research on tropical infectious disease mycetoma
Advising and Grants: Dr. van de Sande has supervised at least 7 doctoral or junior research projects, indicating a strong commitment to training the next generation of scientists. She has secured competitive funding, including the prestigious VIDI and VICI grants, supporting long-term, high-impact research in mycetoma. Her leadership in the World Health Organization committee underscores her role in shaping global health policy for neglected diseases.
Labs and Teams: She leads a research group focused on mycetoma pathogenesis and therapy within Erasmus MC. Her team collaborates internationally, including with experts in Sudan and Germany, and is part of broader networks such as the Mycetoma Action Group. The lab utilizes advanced molecular, microbiological, and pharmacological techniques to address critical gaps in diagnosis and treatment of this neglected disease.
