Professor Wendy Espeland is a core faculty member in the Department of Sociology at Northwestern University. Her research focuses on cultural sociology, organizational behavior, and the intersections of law and quantification. She holds a prominent role in studying commensuration processes, particularly how qualitative phenomena are translated into quantitative metrics.
Her notable works include The Struggle for Water (1998), which earned multiple prestigious awards, and Engines of Anxiety (2016), co-authored with Michael Sauder, examining academic rankings' societal impacts. Current research explores how rankings influence higher education, LGBTQ+ politics, and environmental markets.
Teaching interests include sociological theory, politics of scarcity, and the sociology of quantification. She has advised numerous courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Professional recognition includes awards from the ASA Culture Section, Society for Social Studies of Science, and National Academy of Public Administration.
