Dr. Weiliang Zuo is a researcher at the University of Cologne affiliated with CEPLAS (Cluster of Excellence on Plant Sciences) and the Institute for Plant Sciences, working within the Chair of Terrestrial Microbiology led by Prof. Gunther Döhlemann.
His research investigates the molecular basis of divergent pathogenesis in smut fungi, specifically comparing Ustilago maydis and Sporisorium reilianum. While both pathogens infect maize, U. maydis induces tumors across aerial organs whereas S. reilianum restricts symptoms to floral tissues. Dr. Zuo's work focuses on identifying effector proteins responsible for these phenotypic differences through comparative transcriptional profiling and functional analyses during leaf infection, aiming to elucidate evolutionary mechanisms driving pathogen lifestyle specialization.
As part of the Döhlemann research group, he contributes to advancing fundamental understanding of fungal effector evolution and host manipulation strategies. His research leverages genomic synteny between these pathogens to pinpoint critical virulence determinants, with implications for developing novel crop protection approaches against biotrophic fungi.
