Professor Wei Huang is a Professor of Biological Engineering at the University of Oxford, affiliated with the Department of Engineering Science. His research focuses on synthetic biology, single cell biology, and applications in healthcare and sustainability. He holds a BEng from Qingdao, MSc from Tsinghua, and PhD from the University of Sheffield. As an EPSRC Fellow in Synthetic Biology and Fellow of St Edmund Hall, he leads projects on SimCells platforms for green bioengineering and Raman-activated cell sorting.
His research interests include:
- Engineering SimCells for biofuel production from waste and CO₂
- Diagnostic and therapeutic applications of synthetic cells
- Raman spectroscopy for single-cell analysis and unculturable bacteria studies
- Biosensor development for environmental monitoring
Recent publications highlight advancements in LAMP-based diagnostics, microbial sustainability initiatives, and genome editing in Cupriavidus necator. Awards include EPSRC funding and St Edmund Hall Fellowship. His lab is located at Begbroke Science Park, collaborating on interdisciplinary projects at the interface of engineering and life sciences.
