Prof. Wayne Modest serves as Director of Content at the Wereldmuseum (Amsterdam, Leiden, Rotterdam) and holds a professorship in Material Culture and Critical Heritage Studies at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His work bridges material culture, memory studies, and colonialism’s legacy in Europe and the Caribbean. Key roles include directing the Research Center for Material Culture and curating exhibitions like the 2022 Kingston Biennial Pressure and What We Forget (2019), which challenge Eurocentric narratives. His research emphasizes decolonizing museums, postcolonial heritage, and transnational memory.
Modest’s publications include Matters of Belonging (2019, co-edited) and Victorian Jamaica (2018, co-authored). He co-edits special issues like Anxious Politics in the European City (2016) and explores themes such as museum modernity and Caribbean indigeneity. Current projects include Museum Temporalities and Curating the Colonial, both with Routledge.
His work intersects academia and practice, advocating for inclusive museology and critical heritage frameworks to address colonial legacies. Collaborations span international institutions and artists, emphasizing ethical curation and decolonial praxis.
