Wayne Chung

Wayne Chung is a Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Design. His academic career spans industrial design, product development, and human-centered design research with a focus on creating meaningful user experiences across various domains including medical systems, robotics, consumer products, and industrial applications.

Chung holds a BFA with Honors in Industrial Design with a minor in Business Management from Carnegie Mellon University and a Masters of Industrial Design terminal degree from the University of the Arts. Prior to his current position, he taught at The Ohio State University and served as the interim Director of the Industrial Design Program at Georgia Institute of Technology.

Chung's research spans medical systems and devices, robot design, consumer, and industrial products. He utilizes design research methods and develops new processes to understand the person in context, enabling insight and appropriate innovation within complex environments. His approach emphasizes that material, aesthetics, fit, and user experience can only be designed once the problem is appropriately framed relative to the human, artifacts, and spatial context. His work demonstrates strong trends in human-centered systems design across medical, automotive, robotics, and financial domains.

Chung teaches courses including First-Year Design Labs, Advanced ID/Product Studio, How Things Are Made, UX Research and Design, and co-teaches Biomedical Engineering Design. He has advised numerous students on projects for industry partners. He also delivers executive education workshops to clients across consumer products, medical systems, financial institutions, and academic sectors including BNY Mellon Bank, CMU Heinz College, CMU Tepper Business School, Georgia Institute of Technology, Highmark Health, LG Electronics, SEI Software Engineering Institute, and the United States Air Force Academy.
