Dr. Wayne Altman is the Jaharis Family Chair and Professor of Family Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine. He serves as Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and has held leadership roles including Clerkship Director and Curriculum Director. His primary clinical practice is at Family Practice Group in Arlington, where he co-founded 80+ Wellness Groups achieving significant patient weight loss outcomes. Altman is a co-founder of WellnessCampaign.org, a non-profit promoting wellness initiatives.
Education: MD from University of Massachusetts (1994), BA from Brandeis University (1990). Over 2+ decades at Tufts, he's received 17 teaching awards and Boston Top Doc recognition. His research focuses on group medical visits, faculty development, medical education innovation, and disability care advocacy. Notable projects include standardized patient exercises for disability training and studies on medical scribes' impact on primary care efficiency.
He leads advocacy groups like MAPCAP for anti-racist health policy and Care That Matters for quality metrics reform. His work spans 20+ peer-reviewed publications addressing wellness programs, vaccine hesitancy, climate health, and AI in medicine. Altman's teaching spans family medicine clerkships, residency programs, and over 140 formal teaching activities.
