Warrick Couch is a Distinguished Professor and Special Advisor at Swinburne University of Technology's Centre for Astrophysics & Supercomputing. He previously served as Director of the Australian Astronomical Observatory. His research focuses on extragalactic astronomy, cosmology, and galaxy evolution, utilizing major telescopes like the VLT, Keck, HST, and Chandra. He led the WiggleZ Dark Energy Project and contributed to the Nobel-winning Supernova Cosmology Project.
He has received prestigious awards including the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics (2015), Gruber Prize in Cosmology (2007), and is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. His research explores galaxy dynamics, dark matter halos, and innovative telescope technologies. He has supervised numerous PhD students and led over 30 grants, including ARC-funded projects on galaxy surveys and dark matter studies.
Couch chairs and serves on committees for institutions like the Australian Institute of Physics and Astronomy Australia Limited. His work bridges observational and theoretical astrophysics, with a focus on large-scale structure and environmental impacts on galaxies.
