Wanalee Romero

Wanalee Romero is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL), affiliated with the College of Human Sciences and Humanities. Dr. Romero's research focuses on repositioning early Mexican American literature within the broader American literary canon, emphasizing how sentimental and gothic elements in 19th-century works fostered Anglo sympathy for Mexican communities. She is currently working on a project analyzing Tejana writer Jovita González and her gothic reinterpretation of Mexican history in the Texas Valley context.

Her teaching spans American literature, freshman seminars, and expository writing, with a particular emphasis on supporting first-generation students through themes of belonging and citizenship. She offers specialized courses such as LITR 4338 Latina/o Literature and LLAS 4309 Topics in Latinx & Latin American Studies.
