معرفی
Dr. Walter Piper is a Professor in Biological Sciences at Schmid College of Science and Technology, Chapman University. His research focuses on territorial behavior, habitat selection, and aggressive dynamics in the Common Loon, with significant contributions to conservation biology and ecological monitoring. He holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a B.A. in Biology from Harvard University.
Research Interests
Piper's work examines:
- Impact of site-familiarity on spatial utilization
- Old age effects on behavioral patterns
- Natal habitat imprinting and its ecological consequences
- Longitudinal studies of Common Loon populations
Key Publications
His 2024 articles in Ecology and Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America analyze climate change impacts on loon feeding through water clarity decline. Earlier works (2017-2022) explore territorial aggression, floaters' role in population dynamics, and age-related behavioral investments. His research integrates behavioral ecology with conservation practice.
Funding and Collaborations
Supported by the National Science Foundation, National Geographic Society, and Disney Conservation Fund, Piper leads the Loon Project, which maintains a public database at Chapman University's Digital Commons. His work involves collaborations with institutions like the National Loon Center and Stony Brook University.
