Walter H. Kimball serves as Professor of Special Education in the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Southern Maine, where he has held faculty positions since 1988. His professional background includes roles as a special education teacher and school district special education director, with dual teacher certification in general and special education.
Dr. Kimball earned his PhD from The Ohio State University, an MS in Learning Disabilities from the University of Kentucky, and a BA in Elementary Education from Centre College of Kentucky.
His research focuses on Multi-Tier Systems of Student Support (MTSS) implementation, integrated approaches to general and special education teacher preparation, and leveraging technology to enhance educational outcomes for students with diverse abilities. He actively partners with school districts to develop certification pathways for paraprofessionals and conditionally certified teachers, while contributing to the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) through assessment resource development and technology product evaluation against ISTE standards.
Adhering to his "Sage on the Side" teaching philosophy, Dr. Kimball prioritizes individual student consultations over traditional lectures, emphasizing active engagement in educational practice.
