Wallace Cowling is a Professor at The University of Western Australia's Institute of Agriculture. His career spans plant breeding, genetics, and molecular biology, with a focus on canola, lupins, and Brassica species. He holds a PhD in Plant Pathology from UC Davis (1980) and has been funded by grants exceeding $4 million since 2000. He leads canola breeding projects for NPZ Australia and co-ordinates international collaborations on Brassica genomics and disease resistance.
Key areas of expertise include genomic selection, heterotic pool development, and improving crop resilience to abiotic stresses like heat and drought. He has released commercial canola and lupin varieties and authored over 150 publications. Awards include the FTSE and Churchill Fellowship.
Current research explores optimal contributions selection for accelerated genetic gain, hybrid breeding strategies, and molecular mechanisms of plant disease resistance. He supervises graduate students and contributes to teaching genetics and breeding at UWA.
