Wallace Chafe

Wallace Chafe was a Research Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), affiliated with the Department of Linguistics within the College of Letters and Science. He held a distinguished academic career spanning over six decades, including roles as Chair of the UC Berkeley Linguistics Department and Director of the Survey of California and Other Indian Languages. His research focused on Native American languages (Seneca and Caddo), discourse analysis, prosody, cognition, and laughter studies. Chafe authored foundational works in functional linguistics and was honored with the Constantine Panunzio Distinguished Emeritus Award (2008).
