Waldo Galle

Waldo Galle is an Assistant Professor and academic policy coordinator on sustainability transitions at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), where he is affiliated with the Architectural Engineering department. He also serves as an associate researcher for the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) since 2018. As a member of the research groups VUB Architectural Engineering and Business Technology and Operations, he investigates the financial and socio-technical feasibility of a circular construction economy.

His research focuses on understanding the opportunities and constraints of transitioning to a circular construction economy and how architectural practices evolve in this context. Key areas include circular economy principles in construction, life cycle assessment methodologies, life cycle costing approaches, building reconversion strategies, and sustainable architectural design. His work bridges technical, economic, and social dimensions to provide holistic insights into sustainable building transformations.

Dr. Galle's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on practical applications of circular economy principles in the built environment, particularly examining office-to-housing conversions, heritage building renovations, and material reuse strategies. His research combines technical assessment with socio-economic analysis to evaluate the viability of circular construction practices across multiple dimensions.

As an academic advisor, Dr. Galle has supervised multiple PhD candidates and research projects focused on circular construction practices. His research is supported by numerous grants including the IOF3029 'Huis van Duurzame Transities' project (2024-2028), VLATETRA10 'circulairebouwknopen.be' (2023-2025), and EUREG5 'Upcycling Trust' (2023-2028), among others. He actively collaborates with industry partners and policy makers to translate research findings into practical applications.

Dr. Galle leads the VUB Architectural Engineering research group's efforts in circular construction economy, working closely with the WVDM Living Lab and other interdisciplinary teams to develop innovative approaches for sustainable building transformations.
