Wade Campbell is an Assistant Professor of Archaeology and Anthropology at Boston University. His research focuses on Indigenous archaeology, particularly the relationships between Diné (Navajo) communities and other groups in the U.S. Southwest, colonialism, and pastoralism. He holds a PhD from Harvard University (2021) and an MS in Anthropology/Archaeology from Harvard, supported by the 2015 Ford Foundation Pre-Doctoral Fellowship. Campbell’s work emphasizes low-impact field methods and collaboration with Indigenous communities to rebuild trust between science and Native nations.
His fieldwork spans the U.S. Southwest, Mexico, Nicaragua, Louisiana, Peru, South Africa, and Mali. Key research themes include Diné settlement patterns, subsistence practices, and the integration of GIS/remote sensing in archaeology. He advocates for Indigenous methodologies in archaeology, addressing historical colonial legacies and contemporary cultural resource management challenges.
Campbell teaches at Boston University and actively engages in public scholarship. His notable publications include studies on Navajo pastoralism, weaving history, and rock art symbolism. He emphasizes the interconnectedness of archaeology with modern social issues, particularly public health and tribal sovereignty.
