Víctor Espinosa is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at The Ohio State University's Newark campus. His work focuses on transnational migration, the sociology of art, and qualitative research methods. He holds a PhD from Northwestern University (2012), an MA from El Colegio de Michoacán (1996), and a BA from Universidad de Guadalajara (1992).
His research bridges sociology and the humanities to explore migration, art, and culture from a transnational perspective. Key projects include studies on Mexican migrant families via the Mexican Migration Project, ethnographic work with marginalized communities (e.g., LGBTQ+ individuals, drug users, and Latinx families), and advocacy projects with the Heartland Alliance for Human Rights. His first book, El Dilema del retorno, examines gender and migration decisions, while his second, Martín Ramírez: Framing his Life and Art, analyzes the life of an undocumented artist in California's psychiatric institutions. His current project, Performances of Suffering in Latin American Migration, collaborates with Ana Elena Puga to study migrant suffering narratives through performance studies and human rights advocacy.
Espinosa’s curatorial work promotes migrant and Latinx artists, linking artistic expression to social justice. His research emphasizes the commodification of marginalized artists’ work and the politics of cultural recognition.
