Volya Kapatsinski is a Professor and Department Head in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Oregon, within the College of Arts and Sciences. His research bridges computational learning theory, probabilistic morphophonology, and usage-based linguistic theory, focusing on how frequency effects and cognitive mechanisms drive language acquisition and change.
- Ph.D., Indiana University, Linguistics & Cognitive Science (2009)
- M.A., University of New Mexico, Linguistics (2005)
His work explores hierarchical inference in sound change, morphological constructions, and the role of repetition and retrieval in speech production. Current projects examine how learners balance type and token frequency in grammatical generalizations, with applications to computational models of language evolution.
Recent publications address probabilistic constituency, lexical frequency effects, and error-driven learning in phonetic category formation. He leads the Usage-Based Laboratory (UB Lab) at the University of Oregon, fostering interdisciplinary research in linguistic theory and cognitive modeling.
