Volodymyr Kravchenko

Volodymyr Kravchenko is a Professor in the Department of History, Classics, & Religion at the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Arts. He holds a Doctor of Sciences in History from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1997) and a Candidate of Sciences in History (1986), alongside a Diploma with distinction from Kharkiv State University (1980). His research focuses on Ukraine-Russia relations, historiography, and border studies, with a particular emphasis on the 19th-20th century Russian Empire and the history of historical writing.

He has led numerous academic institutions, including the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (2012–2017) and the Department of Ukrainian Studies at V.N.Karazin National University (Kharkiv). He has also held editorial roles at journals such as East/West: Journal of Ukrainian Studies and Harvard Ukrainian Studies.

His recent publications include Kharkov/Kharkiv: A Borderland Capital (2023) and The Ukrainian-Russian Borderland: History versus Geography (2022), reflecting his expertise in border studies and Ukrainian history. His work has earned awards such as the Solomea Pavlychko Prize (2010) and the Petro Mohyla Award (2004).

Prof. Kravchenko has supervised 2 doctoral and 12 candidate dissertations and contributed to academic leadership roles in Ukraine and globally, including co-founding the Kowalsky Eastern Ukrainian Institute and serving on international scholarly committees.
