Dr. Volkan Cevik is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Life Sciences at the University of Bath, affiliated with the Milner Centre for Evolution. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of plant immunity against pathogens, particularly the interaction between plants and Albugo candida. He investigates how immune receptors recognize pathogen effectors and how pathogens evolve to evade these defenses. His work also includes comparative genomics of pathogens to understand host specialization and virulence.
Current research activities include: (1) studying White Rust Resistance (WRR) proteins and their signaling pathways, (2) engineering resistance proteins for broader specificity, (3) identifying susceptibility factors in host plants, and (4) evolutionary dynamics of Albugo candida races. His research contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to food security and sustainable agriculture.
Dr. Cevik has led or co-investigated multiple grants, including projects on high-resolution respirometry, confocal microscopy, and surveillance systems for white rust pathogens in India. His work spans plant-microbe interactions, pathogen genomics, and crop improvement through genetic engineering.
Recent publications highlight advancements in genetic manipulation for disease resistance, immune receptor function, and pathogen effector biology. He collaborates internationally to advance understanding of plant immunity and pathogen evolution.
