Dr. Vivian Nguyen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Carleton University, within the Faculty of Science. She holds a B.Sc. in Environmental Science (with minors in Biology and Business) and a Ph.D. in Biology with a focus on sociology, both from Carleton University. Her research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to address environmental and societal challenges, particularly in natural resource management, biodiversity conservation, and climate change adaptation. She investigates human motivations and behaviors related to environmental issues and advocates for bridging the 'knowledge-action gap' through knowledge mobilization and co-production.
Her work spans the natural and social sciences, integrating concepts from social ecology, conservation social science, and policy analysis. She collaborates extensively with stakeholders, communities, and policymakers to ensure scientific findings inform practical solutions. Nguyen's research often explores questions about pro-environmental behavior, sustainable practices in fisheries, and effective science communication strategies.
Key areas of focus include human dimensions of fisheries management, conservation social science, and science-policy interfaces. She has contributed to understanding stakeholder perceptions, knowledge uptake in fisheries management, and the role of community engagement in environmental decision-making. Nguyen's commitment to actionable science is evident in her efforts to translate research into policy and practice.
Her educational background in both environmental science and sociology underscores her dual focus on ecological and human systems. She maintains an active research group and engages in public outreach, such as her Science Café presentation on the societal role of social sciences in STEM. Nguyen's office is located in Herzberg 4411, and her work reflects a dedication to equity, diversity, and inclusion in environmental research and education.
