Dr. Vivian Merk is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering at Florida Atlantic University (FAU). She holds a Ph.D. from ETH Zurich, Switzerland. Her research focuses on biomineralization, biocomposites, and chemical imaging techniques, particularly studying biological crystal growth and sustainable materials inspired by nature.
Research interests include:
- Biomineralization mechanisms in marine organisms
- Development of eco-friendly composites for environmental remediation
- Bio-inspired drug delivery systems (e.g., chitosan hydrogels)
- Mechanical properties of mineralized biological tissues
Dr. Merk leads the Merk Lab and collaborates with the Bioinorganic Materials Lab. Her work involves advanced imaging techniques like synchrotron-based nanotomography and correlative microscopy. Recent projects address shark cartilage biomechanics, cyanobacterial nutrient dynamics, and pollution control using iron oxide composites.
Her research has led to innovations in sustainable materials, including mineralized wood and antimicrobial wound dressings. Collaborative projects include studies on harmful algal blooms and drug delivery systems targeting nosocomial infections.
