Vivian Gonzalez

Vivian Gonzalez is Professor in the Department of Psychology at University of Alaska Anchorage. Her research examines substance abuse etiology and treatment, focusing on alcohol misuse correlations with depression/suicide and culturally-adapted interventions for minority populations.

Research areas include:

• Alcohol misuse and disorder etiology
• Adaptation of substance abuse treatment for minority populations
• Comorbidity of depression/suicidal behavior with substance misuse
• Internalized alcohol stereotypes among Indigenous populations

She teaches graduate courses including Substance Abuse: Etiology, Assessment, and Treatment; Quantitative Analysis; Clinical Practicum; Ethics; and undergraduate Abnormal Psychology. Funded research includes NIH grants on Indigenous recovery planning and alcohol outcomes in college drinkers.

Recent publications explore how cultural beliefs about alcohol vulnerability affect coping behaviors and treatment engagement. Laboratory work focuses on technology-assisted interventions and community-based participatory research.
