Vivian Binnie is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow Dental School, where she serves as Deputy Director of Dental Education and Lead for Dental Educational Research and Scholarship. She is also the Chair of the Equality and Diversity Dental School Working Group and leads the Community in Dental Educational Research and Scholarship (CiDERS) group.
Dr. Binnie graduated in dentistry from the University of Glasgow in 1983, completed her Masters in Public Health (MPH) in 1990, and earned her Dental Public Health PhD in 2004, all from the University of Glasgow. She is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
Her research focuses primarily on educational research within clinical dentistry, with special emphasis on student engagement from a 'student as partners' perspective. Her work explores peer assisted learning, non-technical skills development, equality diversity and inclusion initiatives, student motivation through self-determination theory, and assessment and feedback methodologies. She has received significant funding for her work, including five grants from the University of Glasgow Learning Teaching and Development Fund, with her most recent project (2022-2023) reviewing LGBTQ+ inclusion in dental education.
Analysis of Dr. Binnie's publication record reveals a clear trajectory from clinical dental public health research (particularly smoking cessation interventions) toward dental educational scholarship. Her recent work demonstrates expertise in adapting dental education to pandemic conditions, virtual assessment methodologies, and applying educational psychology theories like self-determination theory to dental student motivation.
- Senior Fellow of Higher Education Academy/RET (2017)
- Association of Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) Mature Educator Award (2023)
Dr. Binnie supervises postgraduate dentists and health professionals at doctoral and master's levels in the Health Professions Education Programme. She has successfully guided students through research on stress and resilience, and the application of self-determination theory within dental student populations. Her grant history includes a project funded by The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation (2015) for presenting PhD research and establishing collaborations on academic motivation in Japan, and an ASH Scotland grant (2004-2008) for preventing oral cancer through smoking cessation interventions.
She leads the Community in Dental Educational Research and Scholarship (CiDERS), which serves as both a platform for disseminating ongoing educational research within the Dental School and a mentoring forum for developing early career educators in dental education.
