Viveka Borum-Vaughn, Ph.D., serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Spelman College, where she has taught since 2012. Her instructional portfolio spans foundational to advanced coursework including College Algebra, Precalculus, Calculus sequences, and Foundations of Mathematics.
Her academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Columbia University, Teachers College; an M.A. in Pure Mathematics from Wayne State University; and a B.A. in Mathematics from Wayne State University.
Research centers on systemic equity barriers in mathematics education, specifically investigating the underrepresentation of Black females in mathematical disciplines. She develops interventions to increase Black women's participation in mathematics while emphasizing how mathematical reasoning cultivates transferable critical thinking skills applicable across life domains. Her work bridges theoretical frameworks with practical pedagogical solutions for K-12 through higher education transitions.
Her scholarship examines Historically Black Colleges and Universities as critical incubators for mathematicians from underrepresented backgrounds, revealing institutional strategies that foster talent development in STEM pathways. This research establishes foundational connections between identity-affirming educational environments and mathematical persistence.
