Vivek Goyal is a Professor at Boston University's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), where he serves as Associate Chair of Doctoral Programs and leads the Signal Transformation and Information Representation (STIR) group. His research spans computational imaging, statistical signal processing, and human perception, with applications in autonomous systems and quantum-inspired imaging.
- Education: PhD in Electrical Engineering from University of California, Berkeley
His research interests focus on computational imaging and signal processing, particularly in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging, single-photon detection, and photon-efficient methods. His work has enabled breakthroughs like 3D imaging around corners and long-distance NLOS mapping for autonomous vehicles. Articles highlight interdisciplinary approaches combining optical science, machine learning, and quantum-inspired techniques.
Scientific awards include:
- 2024 Guggenheim Fellow
- 2023 Frontiers of Science Award in Computational Optics
- 2022 AAAS Fellow
- 2019 & 2017 IEEE Signal Processing Best Paper Awards
- 2007 NSF CAREER Award
- IEEE & Optica Fellow
He has advised PhD students like Joshua Rapp (2021 IEEE Best Dissertation Award) and Charles Saunders, with their work featured in Nature, Science, and PNAS. His lab's collaborations include MIT, Washington University, and international institutions in China. Current projects involve DARPA-funded "Invisible Headlights" for autonomous vehicles using thermal emissions.
