Dr. Vittorio Porciatti is a Professor of Ophthalmology and Vice Chair of Research at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami. He holds the James L. Knight Professorship and secondary appointments in Biomedical Engineering and Neuroscience. His research focuses on retinal ganglion cell (RGC) dysfunction in glaucoma and optic neuropathies, with emphasis on early detection and neuroprotection through electrophysiological and gene therapy approaches.
Education: B.S. in Biological Sciences from the University of Pisa (1970), followed by early career as a radiochemist before transitioning to visual neuroscience. Key appointments include voluntary assistant professor at the University of Pisa and senior scientist at the Institute of Neuroscience (Italy).
Research interests include mitochondrial dysfunction in LHON, inflammasome-driven neurodegeneration, and P2X7 receptor antagonism. He leads NIH-funded projects on gene therapy for mitochondrial diseases and neuroprotective mechanisms in optic nerve degeneration.
Teaching includes courses on visual electrophysiology at the University of Miami's Neuroscience Program and Ophthalmology residency programs. Awards include the Knight of the Order of the Italian Star for contributions abroad.
Publications span over 190 peer-reviewed articles, with recent work highlighting gene therapy efficacy in LHON mouse models and neuroinflammatory mechanisms in glaucoma progression.
