Vittorio Ghielmi serves as Univ.-Prof. of Viola da Gamba and Head of the Department for Early Music at Mozarteum University, with additional appointments as visiting professor at the Royal College of Music London. A Milan-born virtuoso with over 30 years of international prominence, he is celebrated for developing the 'il suonar parlante' (speaking sound) concept that revolutionized historical performance practice.
His research spans Early Music interpretation, Viola da Gamba technique, and cross-cultural collaborations with jazz, flamenco, and traditional musicians. Ghielmi uniquely bridges historical authenticity with contemporary innovation through projects like 'The Heart of Sound' film documenting Cuncordu de Orosei traditions, while his 'inner gesture' pedagogy redefines movement foundations in musical expression.
Key accolades include:
- Erwin Bodky Award (Boston) for field studies in ancient musical traditions
- Klassik Echo Prize (2015) for 'The Passion of Music' CD
As a pedagogue, he published a globally adopted viola da gamba method (Ut Orpheus) and conducts master classes at Juilliard, Accademia Chigiana di Siena, and Berlin University of the Arts. His leadership includes three years as Riccardo Muti's assistant at Salzburg Festival.
Ghielmi founded IL SUONAR PARLANTE ORCHESTRA (2007), premiered contemporary works like Uri Caine's viola da gamba concertos, and conducted Rameau's 'Pygmalion' at Stockholm's Drottningholms Slottsteater to Financial Times acclaim. His festival residencies span Musikfest Stuttgart, Segovia, and Bozar Brussels, while collaborations with artists from Cecilia Bartoli to Kenny Wheeler demonstrate genre-defying artistry.
