Vitor Cardoso

Vitor Cardoso is a distinguished academic holding dual professorships in Physics at the Instituto Superior Técnico (University of Lisbon) and the Niels Bohr Institute (University of Copenhagen). He serves as a DNRF Chair and Villum Investigator, reflecting his significant contributions to theoretical physics. His research focuses on General Relativity, Black Holes, and Gravitational Waves, with particular emphasis on understanding gravitational-wave data and the dynamics of black holes in various spacetime environments.

Cardoso's professional roles include leading the Strong Group at the Niels Bohr Institute and the GRIT Group at IST. He has held leadership positions such as Head of the Physics Department at IST (2020–2022) and currently chairs the Scientific Organizing Committee of GR22. His international collaborations include leading the GWverse COST Action and contributing to the LISA mission.

His research interests span fundamental aspects of gravitational physics, including the interplay between gravitational waves and alternative gravity theories, as well as the application of these insights to astrophysical phenomena. He is a founding member of the Portuguese Society of Relativity and Gravitation (SPRG).

Cardoso has garnered extensive recognition, including the prestigious ULisboa Award, an ERC Advanced Grant, and membership in the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. His work has been published in over 200 peer-reviewed articles, and he has supervised numerous PhD and master’s students, contributing significantly to the training of future researchers in gravitational physics.

He is actively involved in scientific outreach through initiatives like Ateliê Cósmico and Gravitão, which engage students and the public in understanding black holes and gravity. His academic leadership extends to roles in editorial boards, including Living Reviews in Relativity, and advisory positions at institutions such as the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics.
