Professor Vito Ferro specializes in synthetic carbohydrate chemistry and drug design at The University of Queensland's School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences. His pioneering work focuses on glycosaminoglycan mimetics for treating cancer, inflammation, viral infections, and lysosomal storage disorders. Key achievements include developing clinical-stage heparanase inhibitors like PI-88 and PG545.
Research explores heparan sulfate-protein interactions, pharmacological chaperones for Sanfilippo syndrome, and novel synthetic routes to rare sugars. Current projects span antiviral heparinoids, antifungals, and radical approaches to L-sugar synthesis.
Honors include:
- SCMB HDR Supervision Excellence Award (2023)
- Fellowship of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute
- SCMB Engagement Award (2014)
