Virve-Maria Toivonen serves as Senior University Lecturer and Docent in Child Rights at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Law, Institute of Criminology and Legal Policy. She acts as Supervisor for the Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences and leads multiple active research projects.
Her research focuses on child rights access within legal systems, emotional violence documentation in child welfare records, and ethical dimensions of newborn screening. Key areas include juvenile justice procedures, disability rights in child protection, and misconduct prevention in youth sports. Her work bridges theoretical legal frameworks with practical implementation challenges in Finnish social services.
Notable scientific recognition includes the Kirjoittajapalkinto 2019 (Writer's Award 2019). Current projects analyze child rights access for minors with disabilities (LAKERI), absence handling in legal proceedings, and monitoring of child custody law reforms.
