Virginia Yip

Prof. Virginia Yip is a Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She serves as Director of the Childhood Bilingualism Research Centre, Co-Director of the Bilingualism and Language Disorders Laboratory at CUHK-Shenzhen Research Institute, Director of the Chinese University of Hong Kong-Peking University-University System of Taiwan Joint Research Centre for Language and Human Complexity, and Co-Director of the University of Cambridge–Chinese University of Hong Kong Joint Laboratory for Bilingualism.

Her educational background includes:

• BA and MA in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin
• MA and PhD in Linguistics from the University of Southern California

Prof. Yip's research centers on bilingual development, language acquisition, and Chinese linguistics, with emphasis on Cantonese and Chaozhou dialects. She integrates psycholinguistics and cognitive neuroscience to examine language contact phenomena, notably in her award-winning work on bilingual children. Her publications include foundational grammar references for Cantonese learners and cross-linguistic studies of interlanguage development.

Her honors include:

• Leonard Bloomfield Book Award (2009) from the Linguistic Society of America for The Bilingual Child: Early Development and Language Contact

Prof. Yip contributes extensively to academic service as editorial board member for Bilingualism: Language and Cognition, International Journal of Bilingualism, Languages, Second Language Research, and Multilingual Education. She served on the European Research Council's Humanities and Social Sciences panel and as faculty for the Linguistic Society of America Summer Institute (2015).

She leads collaborative research initiatives including the Childhood Bilingualism Research Centre and Bilingualism and Language Disorders Laboratory, focusing on empirical studies of multilingual development and language impairment.
