Virginia Valian is Professor of Psychology at Hunter College - CUNY and a member of the doctoral faculties in Psychology, Linguistics, and Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences at the CUNY Graduate Center. She directs the Language Acquisition Research Center and the Gender Equity Project, focusing on syntax acquisition in young children and systemic gender disparities in professional settings.
- PhD in Psychology, Northeastern University
Her research spans two primary domains: computational methods in language acquisition and gender equity in academia. For the former, she analyzes how children infer syntactic structures from caregiver speech using imitation tasks, picture description, and comprehension studies. For the latter, she synthesizes interdisciplinary research to address systemic barriers to women's advancement in science and academia through experimental studies and online tutorials.
Recent publications highlight trends in computational modeling of language development, bilingualism-cognition interactions, and quantitative analyses of gender disparities in scientific fields. Her work integrates psycholinguistic experiments with social policy research.
- National Institute of Mental Health Grant for syntax acquisition studies
- National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Grant for gender equity research
- ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Award
Valian mentors students with computational skills and those committed to rigorous research, supporting lab members through the Language Acquisition Research Center and Gender Equity Project. Her grants emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration and methodological innovation.
