Virginia Louise Wiseman

Professor Virginia Louise Wiseman is a leading academic in health economics and health systems, affiliated with the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. At UNSW, she is based in the Kirby Institute (Faculty of Medicine) and leads the Health Economics Research Network (HERN), a cross-Faculty initiative focused on generating and disseminating health economics evidence.

Her research spans two primary areas: (1) impact evaluations of complex public health interventions for malaria, HIV, STIs, TB, Hepatitis C, and antimicrobial resistance, and (2) evaluations of health financing systems to support universal health coverage. Her work includes system-wide analyses in Cambodia, Fiji, and Timor-Leste, emphasizing equity in health financing.

She has secured over $49 million in research funding and serves as co-chief editor of Health Policy and Planning. Her contributions extend to capacity development in health economics for low- and middle-income countries, with leadership roles in the International Health Economics Association.
