Dr. Violetta Naughton is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Biomedical Sciences, Ulster University, based at the Coleraine campus. She joined Ulster in 2002 as a Marie Curie Research Fellow, transitioning to Teaching Fellow in Physiology and Anatomy in 2005, and became a Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences in 2007. Her academic journey includes a BSc (Hons) in Animal Sciences (First Class) from Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences (Poland) and a PhD in Veterinary Medicine from Warsaw University of Life Sciences (Poland). She has held visiting scientist positions at Lund University (Sweden, 1997) and Research Centre Foulum (Denmark, 1998–2000).
Dr. Naughton’s research focuses on digestive physiology, metabolism, host-microbial interactions, and drug-nutrient interactions impacting musculoskeletal health. She has published over 65 scientific papers and pedagogic outputs. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, Institute of Biomedical Sciences, and Higher Education Academy, and serves as Associate Editor for the Animal Physiology section of Veterinary and Animal Science. She coordinates the Biomedical and Behavioural Research Unit within Ulster’s Biomedical Sciences Research Institute and is a member of the Northern Ireland Licensee Training Group.
Her awards include the Domestic Individual Research Award (1997), Marie Curie Fellowship (2002), and Rector’s Award (2006). She actively contributes to academic governance and interdisciplinary research collaborations.
