Violeta Moreno-Lax

Professor Violeta Moreno-Lax is Full Professor of Law at Queen Mary University of London, specializing in international refugee law and border governance. She founded the Centre for the Legal Study of Borders, Migration and Displacement (B)OrderS and directs the Immigration Law programme. With expertise in extraterritorial jurisdiction and maritime migration, she consults for UN agencies and EU institutions.

Her research examines systemic issues in border governance, including pushback operations, externalization policies, and accountability gaps. Recent work develops theoretical frameworks for 'contactless control' mechanisms and analyzes the rule-of-law implications of EU migration governance. She leads major research projects on shared responsibility at EU borders.

Professor Moreno-Lax has testified before the European Parliament and contributed to landmark litigation at international courts. She holds visiting positions at the College of Europe and has received prestigious fellowships including the Ramón y Cajal Award. Her publications include the monograph 'Accessing Asylum in Europe' and multiple edited collections on migration governance.
