Vincent Richards is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Clemson University, affiliated with the College of Science. His research focuses on microbiomes and human health, particularly the interplay between microbiomes and conditions like HIV-related childhood caries, menopause-associated urinary tract infections, and Legionnaires' Disease linked to water cooling towers. He holds a Ph.D. in Population Genetics from Nova Southeastern University (2010), with prior roles including Postdoctoral Associate at Cornell University and Adjunct Professor of Biology.
Richards leads a lab equipped with advanced DNA sequencing platforms (Illumina MiSeq/NextSeq) and computational resources. His work integrates high-resolution genomic approaches to study strain-level diversity and metabolic activity in microbial ecosystems. Notable awards include the 2020 Junior Researcher of the Year (Clemson University) and 2017 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award (Nova Southeastern University). He teaches courses in metagenomics and microbial genomics.
Recent research highlights include studies on HIV's impact on oral microbiomes in Nigerian children and the role of arginine metabolism in dental biofilms. His lab actively explores probiotic interventions and environmental microbiome dynamics.
