Dr. Vincent K.L. Chang is an Assistant Professor in History and International Relations at Leiden University, affiliated with the Institute for Area Studies. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Leiden Asia Centre. His research focuses on historical experiences and contemporary approaches to nation-building, conflict, diplomacy, and law in East Asia and the Indo-Pacific. Key areas include transnational memory politics, region-building, China-EU relations, and Sino-Dutch ties. He teaches modules on modern Chinese history, memory politics, and international relations in programs like Chinese Studies and International Relations. His current research includes a book project analyzing Chinese-Dutch diplomatic incidents (1950–2000) using archival records and a multidisciplinary study on China’s memory governance ('Global China’s New Heroes').
His work bridges political/diplomatic history, memory studies, and international relations, emphasizing how historical narratives shape contemporary global interactions. Teaching highlights include courses on China’s foreign policy, regional connectivity, and thesis research methods.
