Vincent Cannato

Vincent Cannato is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Boston, specializing in 20th-century American history, urban history, and immigration studies. He has taught courses on New York City history, Boston history, and ethnic history since joining UMass Boston in 2002.

• Education: PhD in History from Columbia University; BA with Honors in Political Science from Williams College

His research focuses on American urban development, political responses to immigration, and ethnic identity formation in metropolitan areas. His work often examines how cities navigate economic and social challenges through governance and policy frameworks.

Recent publications include books on Ellis Island's historical role in immigration, the political legacy of New York Mayor John Lindsay, and a co-edited volume on 1980s America. These works reflect interdisciplinary engagement with political science, sociology, and cultural studies.

Professionally, Cannato has served as managing editor of The Public Interest, co-producer of the PBS documentary The First Measured Century, and held roles as a speechwriter at HUD and aide to Jersey City Mayor Bret Schundler. He resides in Framingham, MA with his family.
