Dr. Vince Miller is a Reader in Sociology and Cultural Studies at the University of Kent’s School of Social Sciences, within the Department of Sociology and Cultural Studies (SSPSSR). He holds a PhD from Lancaster University and a BA/MA in Geography from the University of Alberta, Canada.
His research focuses on three core themes: Digital Culture (including phatic communication, digital ruins, and cybersecurity education), Social Theory (contagion, imitative encounters, and ethics), and Urban/Spatial Studies (resonance, urban fragmentation, and retail spaces). Miller’s work bridges sociology, geography, and media studies, emphasizing critical analyses of technology’s societal impacts.
His recent scholarship critiques phenomena like viral challenges, vehicle-ramming attacks, and YouTube philanthropy, while earlier work explored urban enclaves, online ethics, and spatial vagueness. Miller has consulted for Orange and Skyrite on digital media trends and contributed to policy debates via ESRC grant reviews and media appearances on BBC Radio.
Teaching includes courses on digital culture, urban sociology, and social theory. His lab/teams collaborate on interdisciplinary projects, such as cyber-security education for children and digital disconnection studies. Miller actively supervises PhD students exploring digital labor, memes, and urban revitalization.
