Ville Vuolanto is a University Lecturer at Tampere University’s Faculty of Social Sciences, within the Department of History, Philosophy, and Literary Studies. His research focuses on the social and cultural history of the Roman Empire and Late Antiquity, particularly childhood, family dynamics, and early Christianity in Roman Egypt. He co-leads projects on children’s socialization in Oxyrhynchos and the social history of hope, collaborating with scholars like Dr. April Pudsey and Dr. Oana Cojocaru. Vuolanto teaches Latin language and Roman social history, having supervised over 110 BA, 12 MA, and 2 PhD theses.
His research interests span theoretical historiography, the history of emotions, and the historiography of 'Lapland' from 1840–1960. He has held leadership roles in academic organizations, including chairing the Finnish Historical Society (2024–2025) and the Finnish Network for Ancient Studies (2023–2024). Vuolanto’s publications include monographs like Children and Asceticism in Late Antiquity (2015) and edited volumes such as A Cultural History of Youth in Antiquity (2023). His work bridges ancient studies with contemporary societal relevance, emphasizing interdisciplinary methods and public engagement.
